Acupuncture Healthcare - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is acupuncture?
The ancient Chinese recognized that energy flows through the human body along certain lines called meridians. When the flow of energy becomes blocked or out of balance, pain and disease result. After a careful diagnosis to determine which meridian or meridians are affected, very fine needles are inserted to balance and ease the flow, thus returning the body to its natural state of health and vitality.

Does it hurt?
When the needles activate the energy system, they produce a momentary sensation. Common sensations may be aching, a feeling of heat, tingling, or a numbing sensation, and may be felt along the meridian, instead of at the needle. Most clients feel very relaxed and even fall asleep when left with the needles in place.

What if I do not like needles?
There are many other modalities that are very effective, and do not use needles.  Emily will happily discuss the options with you.  Most patients, however, are releived once they experience the needles, because the insertion of the needles usually causes little pain.

Does insurance cover treatments?
Yes, and no. Some insurance companies will pay for acupuncture depending on who performs the treatment. Most companies, however, decline paying for acupuncture treatments.  What works best are " cafeteria plans, " which use funds
that you have set aside for medical treatments.  It is best to consult your insurance company for their criteria.  Some companies allow the cost of acupuncture treatments to count towards the deductible.

Do you treat my problem?
Most often the answer is yes.  Problems in the body are the result of disturbances in the energy system.  Emily will diagnose where the energy system is out of balance and work to restore the balance.  For specific questions, please contact us.
